I frequently launch out of Sterling State Park or Lake Erie Metro Park. If anyone would like to get together for an outing let me know. I would also be interested in other recomended launch sites. Tim

These are both in Michigan, southeast of Detroit. Tim

Hello Tim
Did you see the post on the Sandusky area? We should have more get togethers. Great place to sail but I never see any WRs up here.

I'd like to be in on this too. I was traveling a lot for work this year, and was very busy over the summer, but I could be more available next year (don't know right now what I will be doing). I went out on Lake Erie Metropark one time this past summer. I had heard that one can land on Celeron Island, and had some fun there, and anchored out and went swimming, etc with my teenagers. The Detroit River is more fun than I expected, with some interesting exploring to do. Sandusky would be interesting as well. I updated my profile so I get e-mailed when someone replies, so hopefully I will stay in touch.

From Sandusky, only beach/camping area I can think of is at Kelley Islands State park. Nice area but it is one of the smallest state parks and most popular. Reservations early is a must. There is East Harbor State park but I am not sure about overnite mooring. Plenty of beach. Any beaches here are either state parks or privately owned. Plenty of places to hit for a day sail.

We went to Kelleys Island a couple years ago. The cove was nice to sail out of - we sailed over to Put-In-Bay. Landing at Put-In-Bay was a bit difficult - no place that we could find that was legal. The other problem was that the ferry ride to KI was very, very expensive. A bit ridiculous because they charge for the car, the trailer, and each person (I took the whole family). Oh well, if something is set up I would still go. The Detroit River is more fun because there is an island to land on and check out, anchor by the lighthouse next to the ship channel, but no camping.

The idea was to sail to Kelleys. No ferry. Or if needed I could ferry over a ton of stuff in my car and trailer. Not a lot of protection though if a strong north blow would come.
I heard they are making a new campgroud on I believe the island across from Put In Bay. Middle Bass? I'll check into it.

Sailing over to KI would be fun. I didn't try leaving my boat on the beach there. I would probably be worth a call to the ranger to make sure he is ok with it. Check this out - http://www.southbassrendezvous.com/ seems there is a place to sail to on South Bass Island.

Finally got a reply to my question concerning beaching at Kelly's Island State Park. Per Asst. Mgr. of Kelly's Island State Park... Kim,
I received your inquiry in regards to taking boats up onto our beach. We have an area we refer to as the "East beach". It is a natural sand beach area to the east of the bathing beach (designated by buoys). It is to the left of the camp ground if you are in the north bay facing south (towards the campground). If anyone in your group has been to our park then you could tell them it is the beach area by our fish cleaning house.
This "east beach" area is sand covered with very few rocks. Many small boats and kayaks pull up onto this area throughout the season. I think 10 boats or so would be fine, not sure how wide a 14 foot hobie cat is. Only real worry is when a north, NE or NW wind kicks up and washes up onto the beach and comes in contact with boats that are not pulled up far enough.
Hope this helps,
Thanks
Mike Monnett

This is a popular spot for big boats too, to anchor when there is not a north wind. On rough water days there are slips on the south side of the island. Kim

That is great news. I am still stinging from the high cost of the ferry. A weekend trip from Sandusky to KI would be easy for me, maybe in mid-September? After labor day the parks are usually not as crowded.

Sept sounds better. I am so busy now I have not even had time to go out once. The ferry cost could be divided as we only need one vehicle on the island. Actually not needed but would be nice.
